Speak out Geeks!

I have been following Terrible Minds for several months now, and I must say I love it.

It’s a blog for writers by a writer, and an amusing writer at that.  His style is witty and humorous, and something I don’t mind reading even when the topic is not one I would normally be interested in.  Also, Monkey.  But that goes without saying.

If you are a writer, or if you find the business of writing interesting, you will love his blog.  Seriously.

Now, ya’ll know I am a fan of writing (obviously) and a fan of Role Playing Games (*waves to her RP buddies* Does anyone else read this thing?)  So I was ecstatic when I logged in this morning and checked my RSS feeds….and found THIS!

“Why Writers Should Play Role Playing Games”

For real.  Someone GETS it.  I mean…REALLY gets it.  Role Playing games hones your writing skills, it makes you THINK about your character about what they do and WHY they do it….and yes, I AM overcapitalizing for emphasis and YES I am okay with that.

You can’t get writer’s block at the game table. Not as a game master, not as a player. You can’t be all like, “Yeah, I’m just not feeling my character’s actions today, let’s try again tomorrow.” It’s shit or get off the pot time, Vampire Cleric from Minneapolis. You gotta do something. Anything. Stab! Throw a Molotov! Hide under a car! Manifest your Vampire Cleric batwings and take flight above the city!

Same thing goes for writing. Shit or get off the pot. Do something. Throw a narrative grenade. If anything will remind you of this, it’s the act of rolling the bones with a couple-few like-minded gamer-types.

Love this.  I don’t know how many times I have thought myself completely stuck, unable to come up with an idea for my characters or direction for their story…into RP I go and BAM I’m taken by surprise and find a whole new direction for them.  Or even better, find that I am forced to think about their backstory in a more detailed way, ferreting out the interesting bits until I HAVE to more forward because it is a story that is demanding to be told!

*ponders a bit more* Yes…yes I can say I agree with everything this man wrote in this article.  Well done Sir.  Bravo.  Bravo indeed!
